ETIAS 2026: What You Need to Know
Europe's new travel authorization system for visa-exempt travelers
What is ETIAS?
ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) is a pre-travel authorization required for citizens of visa-exempt countries before visiting the Schengen Area. Similar to the US ESTA or Canada's eTA, it is NOT a visa — it is a lightweight, online-only travel authorization linked to your passport.
Who needs ETIAS?
Nationals of over 60 visa-exempt countries, including: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Mexico, Israel, UAE, Singapore, and many more.
How to apply
- Fill out the online form — personal details, passport info, security and health questions (~10 minutes)
- Pay the fee — €7 for adults aged 18–70, free for minors and those over 70

ETIAS does not change the 90/180-day rule
ETIAS authorization does NOT extend your stay beyond 90 days. The 90/180-day rule remains exactly the same. ETIAS is an additional screening step before travel, not a replacement for the stay limit.
Current status
ETIAS has been delayed several times to allow EES to go live first. As of early 2026, it is expected to become operational in late 2026, approximately 6 months after full EES deployment.
